The La Liga title race is wide open as Barcelona lose at Real Sociedad [Tweets]

A couple of weeks ago, the La Liga title race looked all over.

Barcelona were coasting to win another La Liga and the triple looked likely, certainly the Spanish double with just a Copa del Rey final to come.

Defeats on consecutive Saturday nights have blown La Liga completely open.

Last Saturday night, Barcelona famously lost 2-1 at home to Real Madrid. That result could be put down to the emotion of paying respects to Johan Cruyff, the travel the front three had to put in for World Cup qualifiers and a tough El Clasico.

Tonight’s defeat against Real Sociedad, albeit not an easy place to go, indeed Barcelona lost there last season under David Moyes, was a serious blow.

A fifth minute goal from Mikel Oiarzabal was the difference between the two sides and Barcelona’s lead in La Liga has been seriously cut.

Wins for Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid today, mean Barcelona are just three points and four points respectively ahead of second and third.

Barcelona do have a better head-to-head record against both Atletico and Real Madrid, but has their momentum gone at a key time.

Ahead of the Champions League second leg quarter-final, Barcelona could struggle on Wednesday evening.

And, with six games remaining in La Liga, things could get very “squeaky bum time” for Barcelona, if their rivals can keep up the pressure.

Been watching Barcelona today at Real Sociedad. Not impressed. Their legs seem heavy though.
