Could Carlo Ancelotti return to Chelsea to replace Jose Mourinho in the dugout?
Yes, says the Mirror on Wednesday, but only if the 56-year-old Italian receives certain guarantees and in certain circumstances.
Firstly, and clearly obviously, the Special One needs to sacked. That first hurdle may prove significant hurdle as Mourinho seems reticent about continuing in the job in west London.
Secondly, say the Mirror, Ancelotti is demanding a long term deal with the Pensioners. Previously, the coach had been in charge of the Blues on just an interim basis until the end of the season, however such a deal would no longer interest the out-of-work Carlo.
Stepping backwards, one has to wonder whether the long-term deal issue is in fact a red herring.
Most football fans will believe that contracts, particularly managerial contracts, offer very limited long term security for coaches: indeed, Jose Mourinho recent signed a brand new contract extension with Chelsea, and now he’s supposedly on the chopping block!
Finally, it’s worth noting that the Mirror wholly ignored quotes from Carlo Ancelotti given to Gazzetta dello Sport this week, in which he backed Mourinho to come good with the Blues. He said:
Don’t worry, Mourinho will put everything back inorder, he is the right man.
